23-year-old bassoonist Matthew Kitteringham studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Robin O’Neill and Jonathan Davies and enjoys a varied schedule of solo performance and chamber music, combined with orchestral work. Matthew is a recipient of the Bundy Award, Arthur Lyons Scholarship and Paddy Purcell Award as well as the RAM Florence Woodbridge Prize for bassoon.
Matthew has given regular solo and chamber music recitals in London and around the UK, and as a soloist he made his international debut in 2016, performing Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto in C Major (RV 473) in Adria, Italy, with a chamber orchestra from the Conservatorio “Antonio Buzzolla”. He subsequently returned to Italy in 2017, performing Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto in A Minor (RV 498) in Cesena and Ferrara in collaboration with Cesena’s Conservatorio “Bruno Maderna”.
As a chamber musician, Matthew is a member of the flexi-group Ensemble Mirage, and in 2017 his woodwind quintet, Aurelia Winds, won the Nicholas Blake Prize at the Royal Academy. Matthew has also played twice live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, performing wind quintets with students from RAM and the Juilliard School, as well as bassoon quartets. In 2018, he performed at Wigmore Hall in a side-by-side concert with the Nash Ensemble.
Matthew has worked with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Knussen Chamber Orchestra in addition to performing regularly with the Academy Symphony Orchestra during his studies. He is an extra with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and currently the principal bassoonist of Arch Sinfonia. He also performs regularly with freelance orchestras such as the Orpheus Sinfonia and Faust Chamber Orchestra.
Matthew is generously supported by The Drake Calleja Trust, The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Help Musicians UK, and The Sidney Perry Foundation as a Philharmonia MMSF Fellow.
